Chapter Four

Ben slowly rode into Trinidad late that morning. The town seemed quiet. He rode up to the sheriff’s office and got off his horse just as the sheriff was coming out of his office.

“Hello, Marshal.”

“Sheriff, nice little town you got here.”

“It can be.”

“Mind if we have a talk in your office?”

“If you don’t mind cold coffee.”

Ben smiled as Sheriff Lane opened the door for him.

“So, Marshal, what brings you to town?”

“Rebecca.”

“Rebecca Matthews?”

“Well, she mentioned that a few days ago three men had stopped her and asked for directions to town.”

“And you think it’s the three you’re looking for? Well, we can go check at the hotel then have a look in the saloon.”

“I was thinking the same.”

When they headed out the door, Chet and Sam Cummings, who were exiting the local saloon, noticed Ben coming out of the sheriff’s office.

“Chet, ain’t that that marshal who was after us? I thought you said we killed him.”

“Looks like we didn’t, little brother, but we can get another chance right now.”

He drew his gun just as Ben saw both of them across the street. Ben pointed them out to the sheriff just as Chet started shooting.

Ben drew his gun. Innocent bystanders rushed for cover and safety. Ben’s bullet entered Sam Cummings’s leg, and Sam fell to the ground in pain.

Chet grabbed the first horse he saw and headed out of town, leaving his brother behind. Ben rushed up to Sam and tossed the fallen man’s gun off to the side.

“My leg… You gonna let me just lay here and bleed to death?”

“You and your brother tried to do that to me.”

Doc Baldwin ran over and saw Ben.

“Seems you’ve given him the same wound he gave you, Marshal. This one here one of the ones you’re looking for?”

“His brother took off, and I have no idea where Diaz is.”

“Well, we can have this one enjoy the comforts of our jail for a few days,” the sheriff said.

Some of the townsmen helped get Cummings into the sheriff’s office. The sheriff followed them, but Ben stopped him.

“Sheriff, I have to follow Chet before he gets too far ahead and I lose him again.”

“I understand, Marshal. This one will be here when you get back. You can count on that.”

“Thanks, Sheriff.” That was all he said as he turned and rode out of town. In his business, there’s no looking back, always looking ahead.

Just over the horizon was Chet Cummings, and at the moment, that was all that mattered.
